Welcome Back to “31 Days 31 Scores”.  Happy Halloween, I hope you‘ve enjoyed this year’s line-up of scores.  I thought I would end this month on a humourous note and the 2014 score to “Zombeavers” by Jon and Al Kaplan fits the bill. (Yes, this is a real movie.) The score has a very 80’s feel to it opening up with a synth and rock style “Main Title”.  There is no question here that this is a parody score with over the top synth flourishes and electric guitar.  It knows exactly what kind of movie it’s in and it’s not holding anything back.  The Kaplan’s definitely studied 80’s film music because the score just drips with synth to add suspense with some subtle piano feeling very much like Friday The 13th or A Nightmare On Elm St.  The score does add some real instruments with the cue “Kill It!” giving the cue a psycho feel.  While the score does have serious tone to it there is also a subtle tongue in cheek feel.  I love B movies and “Zombeavers” is definitely a B movie.  The score rounds out with a song performed by Nick Amado in a lounge style.  It’s rather fun.  “Don’t board up the doorways and windows, my friend. It won’t do any good.  These furry brown bastards are fully equipped, and they’ll chew right through the wood.”

Jon and Al Kaplan have nailed the 80’s B-movie feel here and for a score that was put together very quickly and on a tight budget the quality is quite good, “Zombeavers” is definitely worth sinking your teeth into.  Zombeavers was released on the La-La Records.

Well that’s all for 2016’s 31 Days 31 scores.  Join me October 2017 for more 31 Days 31 scores where “We’ve lost control. Kill them all.”
